Happy New Year by Microgaming

Microgaming’s Happy New Year classic slot may sound like a once a year seasonal game, but it is different enough to other online fruit machines to merit playing it all year round. The name of the game also presented an opportunity for the developer to shoehorn in another Oriental theme – the name is based on the Chinese version of the celebrations, meaning plenty of firecrackers and paper lanterns taking the place of various fruits and sevens.

You’ll notice one of the differences between this game and others in a similar style from the moment the game loads, as a three by two layout replaces the traditional nine squares. This effectively opens up some brand new winning possibilities, making this one of the only five line fruit machines around for starters. Any combination of fireworks leads to a prize, and the overall cash amounts continue to get better and better until you reach the game’s logo, which we would assume represents the Chinese characters for Happy New Year itself.

The importance of the win lines becomes apparent if you do manage to land three logos on one of them as the very same winning combination can be worth anywhere from a thousand to 2,400 coins for the same combination. Land it on the first win line, which strikes through the middle of the board, and you grab the lower end prize. Spin it on the fifth line which runs diagonally from bottom to top, however, and that prize is suddenly worth over twice as much.

Happy New Year can be a little frustrating if your larger combinations simply won’t land on the right lines but, in fairness, a thousand coins is always a decent reward when playing fruit machines. It certainly offers a decent change of pace for classic slots fans through graphics and gameplay and is well worth checking out. Our handpicked Microgaming casinos here on the site have all been selected specifically with UK players in mind and you can rest assured that you’ll find the real money version of this game and many more when you head over to them.
